North West councils seek firms for £117m highways contract

The Highways Agency is set to form a £2 billion framework to deliver the earlier schemes of the managed motorways programme.

Two North West councils are tendering for a £117m highways maintenance contract.

Halton Borough Council and Warrington Borough Council, both in Cheshire, have notified firms of the six-year contract, which could potentially be extended to a 10-year job.

This means the local authorities can extend the contract annually for up to four years after the initial term, which will run from June 2023 to May 2029.

The sizeable highways contract includes improvement construction work, programmed maintenance and routine maintenance, as well as seasonal and emergency response services.

Drainage work, street lighting, work on bridges, potholing, patching, resurfacing and signage are listed by the councils on the tender.

Building car parks, setting up fences and highway barriers, and constructing carriageways, footways and cycleways are also included.

Small and medium firms have been encouraged to bid for the job.

Last month, Kier scored a seven-year contract, worth £420m, to work on highways for North Northamptonshire Council.
