Meet Tony Croxford: HSQ Recruitment Consultant

HSQ Recruitment has welcomed Tony Croxford, who has joined the team to support our growth plans as we head into our second year. Tony joins us as a Recruitment Consultant, supporting Elliot Barwick, our Senior Consultant, within Civil Engineering, rail, and infrastructure recruitment.

Before joining HSQ Recruitment, Tony has worked within a variety of industries. From working as a Logistics Coordinator for a motorcycle parts company to working as a Radio Producer for an independent station.

Coming from such a varied background, Tony has a wealth of transferable skills that have helped him in his first few months. Martin Spencer (Business Manager) says ‘Recruitment is an exceptionally varied industry to work in, with it being people and service focused, every day is as varied as the candidates or the clients we’re working with. Tony has a great ability to understand people which has translated to already being able to fully understand his candidates and clients’ needs and meet their requirements. The way he’s been able to fit into our team so seamlessly has also been so important with HSQ moving into our second year of business.’

We recently caught up with Tony to see how his first couple of months has been.

Can you give us some background on your career and what led to you joining HSQ Recruitment?

I previously worked as a Radio Producer in London, I move on from this to move back up north which then led to me working in sales for a motorcycle parts importer and exporter. I was contacted by HSQ Recruitment for an opportunity, came in and met the team and felt that this was the place that was right for me.

Tell us about your role and responsibilities?

I’ve come into the company very new to recruitment, having had no prior experience so the first couple of months has all been about learning about the company, our candidates, and our clients. We’ve recently won some huge contracts so my day-to-day focus is finding candidates in the civil engineering, rail and infrastructure industries and matching them with our clients.

How have your first couple of months been?

Great! I feel like I’ve been able to transfer some of my previous sales skills to my role and grow in confidence, not just at work but in my life in general. Speaking to so many different candidates and clients' daily has made me confident in my approach to people in everyday life. I also came in just before Christmas when we had our Christmas party so it was great to get to know everyone that way and celebrate the success of our first year in business!

The people I get to work with daily from my fellow Recruitment Consultants to our support in Finance, Compliance and Marketing has also been a huge part of my time here so far. I’ve been fully supported in my training and been given the tools to develop in my role.

What aspects of your role are you most excited about and what are you looking forward to?

I’m enjoying the fact that every day there’s something new to learn. I particularly like building relationships with candidates and clients and I’m looking forward to the familiarity you get when you’ve worked with a client/ candidate for a long time. I’ve got some good goals for the year, I’d like to bring on my own clients a little further down the line and become a proficient 360 recruiter, both will help HSQ Recruitment expand further.


What initially attracted you to a career in recruitment?

I liked the idea of managing my own desk, having my own clients and building a good pool of candidates, I think coming from a sales background gave me a lot of transferable skills. I’ve found that I can build my own ways of working, sourcing and placing candidates so I like the flexibility it gives me.

What would you say to anyone looking to start their career in recruitment?

Go for it! Now that I’ve started I wouldn’t do anything else. If you’re unsure just give us a call and I’m sure any of the team would be happy to talk you through the day to day of life in recruitment!
